Malaria in South Africa

BOOK A VEHICLE

If you are travelling around South Africa on your own, please check if you need to take any precautions for malaria.

Malaria is occurs in the north-eastern areas of South Africa (Mpumalanga, Kruger Park, Swaziland, Kwa-Zulu Natal), and the risk period is mainly between mid January to April especially after the rain.

Malaria is transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes, normally active in the early evening and night. You are probably the most vulnerable when you are sleeping or sitting around an evening campfire.

Both resistant and normal strains of malaria are encountered here, but simple precautions can make malaria is easily manageable. With sensible behavior, the problem can easily be managed

In Malaria risk areas we emphasise caution between dawn and dusk. We recommend the following preventative measures to avoid being bitten:

  • Application of insect repellent to bare skin
  • Long sleeved shirts, long trousers with socks when outdoors after dark.
  • Sleeping under mosquito-nets.
  • Burning mosquito coils and mosquito mats in sleeping areas.
