Situated north of the Johannesburg city centre, Braamfontein is one of the forth-largest economic centres in Gauteng. Probably one of the most outstanding features of the district is the majestic Nelson Mandela Bridge, a gateway into Joburg's city centre.

Braamfontein is an administrative centre for the city council, home to numerous tertiary education institutions including the University of the Witwatersrand, various diplomatic representatives and cultural centres.

The area has gone through a rebirth with the district's regeneration initiative pioneered by the Johannesburg Development Agency and key property owners.
